A Vermont man, who came to the aid of a stranded motorist, was killed and at least six others injured following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 285 in Jonesboro, about 20 miles south of Atlanta.Sean C. Putnam, 23, of Peru, Vt. was on active duty in the U.S. Army. He was a 2012 graduate of Norwich University in Northfield, Vt, where he was a member of the corps of cadets and a criminal justice major, records show.The Clayton County Police said Putnam had stopped to help a woman, whose vehicle broke down in an inside lane near where the interstate highway divided about 10 p.m. Thursday.Putnam was struck by multiple vehicles in the chain-reaction crash, Public Information Officer Charlene Watson-Fraser told the Burlington Free Press.A second person, who also stopped to help the woman, was injured, she said. The stranded woman was not injured.The crash involved five vehicles and at least one of them caught fire, according to WXIA-TV, a Gannett-owned station in Atlanta.Watson-Fraser said the accident remains under investigation.
