Salinas, CA : Construction worker killed in Highway 68 crash on Thursday morning, October 30, 2014

A 50-year-old Salinas man is accused of hitting and killing a utility worker on Highway 68 Thursday morning while driving 90 miles per hour in a construction zone. The victim's name was released Thursday afternoon by the Monterey County Sheriff's Coroner as 51-year-old Jesus Fernandez, of Tracy, California. Adam Zubiate was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI. California Highway Patrol officers believe he was high on a stimulant like cocaine or methamphetamine. The incident happened shortly after midnight when Zubiate was driving eastbound on Highway 68 just west of Corral de Tierra Road. Crews were conducting one-way traffic control when a 1999 Mercedes Benz driven by Zubiate passed the pilot vehicle going 90 miles an hour. Fernandez, a Bay Traffic Solutions employee, was struck by the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP says Zubiate continued to drive for another half mile before stopping. Witnesses remained with him until emergency personnel arrived on scene. Highway 68 was shut down for more than two hours while the CHP investigated. Zubiate was booked into the Monterey County Jail. Work at that site has been temporarily suspended and grief counselors have been brought in to help crews deal with the tragedy.
