Topeka, KS : Father, 9-year-old son struck in hit-and-run crash on east of S.E. 25th and California on Monday, February 29, 2016

Police early Monday were looking for a green sport utility vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured two pedestrians — a father and his 9-year-old son — at the north entrance of the East Topeka Walmart store.

Another child, a 7-year-old boy who was with his father and brother, wasn’t struck by the vehicle, authorities said.

Emergency responders were sent about 7:34 a.m. to the scene of the hit-and-run on S.E. 25th Street, about a block east of California Avenue.

Topeka police officer Aaron Bulmer said at the scene that a father and his two sons were walking west on the south side of S.E. 25th and were crossing the private entrance to the Walmart store when the father and oldest son were hit by a green SUV — possibly an Oldsmobile Bravada.

The father and son who were hit rolled onto the hood of the SUV, then fell off and rolled a couple more times on the asphalt pavement, Bulmer said.

The SUV then drove off through the Walmart parking lot without stopping to render aid or report the collision.

Bulmer said police would be looking at Walmart security surveillance tape to help them identify the vehicle and driver, described by victims only as a black male.

He added that Topeka fire crews that were “in the right place at the right time” got a look at the suspect vehicle as it was leaving the scene.

The father and son who were struck by the SUV were treated at the scene, then were taken to a local hospital by American Medical Response ambulance with serious injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Bulmer said the older son was preparing to wait for a school bus near S.E. 25th and California Avenue.

The father and the younger son were walking to Highland Park Central Elementary School.

The 7-year-old son who wasn’t injured rode with his older brother in the ambulance to the hospital. A Topeka Unified School District 501 school resource officer was traveling to the hospital to be with the students until their mother could be notified.

The hit-and-run scene was just south of Highland Park High School.
