Byron, CA : 4 injured when sedan, minivan crash on the Byron Highway near North Bruns Way on Tuesday morning, January 6, 2015

Four people were injured, two of them critically, after a head-on collision Tuesday morning that shut down a key highway in unincorporated Contra Costa County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash between a silver Sedan and a silver SUV happened around 6:50 a.m. on the Byron Highway near North Bruns Way, and left both drivers with major injuries, CHP Officer John Fransen said. Police were still determining the cause of the collision.

Fransen said that one of the drivers probably drifted over the double yellow lines.

A female driver from Tracy who was driving a silver Chrysler 300, and a male who was driving a Ford Windstar minivan were takento San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp with major injuries, Fransen said. Rescue personnel performed CPR on the woman and she was conscious when she was loaded onto a medical helicopter, Fransen said.

The ages and identities of the two drivers were not released.

Two passengers in the minivan were hospitalized with minor injuries, Fransen said.

The Byron Highway was blocked in both directions after the wreck and closed for about 1 hour, 20 minutes, CHP Officer Ron Simmons said. The CHP was able to direct one-way traffic around the wreck around 8:45 a.m. and lifted a severe traffic alert just before 9 a.m.
