Loveland, CO : 48-year-old man died in east Loveland accident on Friday morning, April 22, 2016
A 48-year-old man died Friday morning at Crossroads Boulevard and Interstate 25 after swerving his cargo van into the median and vaulting off into a concrete embankment at the overpass.
According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gil Villavicencio, dispatch received a call at 8:56 a.m. Friday reporting a van had crashed head-on into the overpass' concrete wall.
Loveland Fire Rescue Authority crews responded to the accident with Colorado State Patrol troopers.
Villavicencio said the van was driving southbound on I-25 just north of the Crossroads Boulevard exit when the driver, later identified as Timothy Decicco of Fort Collins, slowly slid off the left side of the road and onto the median.
Decicco then drove south on the median for over 2,000 feet before reaching the overpass.
"He vaulted on the overpass and then hit the embankment under the bridge on Crossroads," Villavicencio said. "... With his speed he literally went airborne and didn't hit anything — he just vaulted. His first impact was his hood into the concrete."
The van was thought to have been traveling at approximately 75 mph at the time it hit the overpass. Villavicencio added there were no skid marks from the van's tires as it moved onto the median.
Villavicencio said why Decicco drove off the road is still under investigation.
Eastbound Crossroads Boulevard was closed just west of the I-25 northbound on-ramp as crews investigated and cleaned the accident scene up.
