A 77-year-old man was hit and killed by a van Thursday morning while trying to cross Center Street in Salem.

Officials said David McGregor, 77, was walking across Center Street in an unmarked crosswalk near 18th Street Northeast at around 5:45 a.m. when he was hit =by an eastbound van driven by The driver, 64-year-old Stephen Buchanan of Keizer.

According to crash investigators, McGregor was wearing dark clothing and was crossing very slowly while using a cane.

Buchanan stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police, Lieutenant Dave Okada said. As of Thursday afternoon, Buchanan has not been cited for the crash and investigators are continuing to look into the crash.

Officers closed down Center Street between 17th and Statesman Streets for over three hours to let investigators reconstruct the crash.
