ZEBULON, NC : Bicyclist dies after head-on collision with minivan near Zebulon on Saturday, 31st October, 2020

A bicyclist died after a head-on collision with a minivan in eastern Wake County Saturday night, officials said.

The crash happened around 7:15 p.m. along N.C. 96 just north of Fowler Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the bicyclist, a local man in his 20s, was headed north in the northbound lane when a car also traveling north approached the cyclist from behind.

For an unknown reason, the bicyclist then switched lanes and moved into the southbound lane. However, a minivan was headed south at the time and the bicyclist collided head-on with that vehicle, according to Trooper A.T. Main.

Troopers said they they are not sure why the bicyclist switched lanes. Main said that alcohol might have been involved on the part of the bicyclist.

Authorities did not release the bicyclist’s name Saturday night. No charges are expected in the crash, but the incident is still under investigation, Main said.
