A 52-year-old man was struck and killed by a pickup as he walked down an Auburndale road late Saturday night, Polk County deputies said. John Marcus Haney, of Lakeland, was found on the south shoulder of U.S. 92 west of Payne Road early Sunday morning and was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. Paul Marx, 41, of Auburndale, called deputies at 1:19 a.m. and told them he hit something while driving east on U.S. 92 near Combee Road in Lakeland, deputies said. Marx initially thought it was a tire or other debris and did not stop to see what he hit, deputies said. When he got home, he called a friend and they checked the damage to his 2004 Ford F150, deputies said. Marx and his friend then returned to U.S. 92 to see if they could find what he hit, deputies said. After not finding anything, they returned to Marx’s home and called the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to report the crash. Investigators learned Haney was seen in the area of Old Dixie Highway and U.S. 92 just after 11 p.m., deputies said. It appears he then walked east on the shoulder of U.S. 92 and was struck about 11:30 p.m. just west of Payne Road, deputies said.
