HAMPSTEAD, NC : Two-vehicle crash snarled traffic on US 17 in Pender County on Monday, 26th September 2016

North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers responded to an accident that caused massive delays near U.S. 17 and N.C. 210 in Hampstead Monday afternoon.
According to Trooper J.A. Murray with the State Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 12:11 p.m. when a drunk driver traveling northbound on U.S. 17 sideswiped a car and then went left of center of the road and hit a fuel tank on a box truck.
As a result of the accident, the box truck leaked diesel fuel onto the roadway and troopers initially closed three southbound lanes and left one lane open to clear the spill causing major traffic delays.
By 2 p.m., troopers had closed the turning lane to N.C. 210 and one southbound lane.
A female passenger of the car was taken to NHRMC with minor injuries.
The driver of the vehicle was cited for driving while impaired.
