Emeryville, CA : Eight-car crash just off of the Bay Bridge shut down all eastbound Interstate 80 lanes on Thursday September 18th 2014
An eight-car crash just off of the Bay Bridge in Emeryville shut down all eastbound Interstate 80 lanes Thursday night, snarling traffic during the evening commute, the California Highway Patrol said.
A semitruck, Toyota Prius and three other cars collided near the eastbound Interstate 580 split at about 5:47 p.m., blocking the No. 2, 3 and 4 lanes, the CHP said.
Soon after, three more cars entered the fray, crashing into the disabled vehicles. Authorities shut down all eastbound lanes for just over an hour while emergency crews responded to the scene, but reopened the No. 1 and 2 lanes around 6:45 p.m.
At least one injury was reported, and crews were working to extricate the injured person from a vehicle at 6:10 p.m., said CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.
The cause of the crash is still unknown, but the CHP reopened all lanes around 7 p.m.
