Haywood County, TN : Bowling Green couple killed in Haywood County crash Wednesday on Interstate 40, June 25, 2014
Tony and Kristi Mills were the husband and wife killed in one of the tractor-trailers in a fiery crash Wednesday on Interstate 40 in Haywood County, according to their family.
There were two other fatalities in the accident, which involved two commercial vehicles and at least two passenger cars, the Highway Patrol said. Officials said they believed two people were killed in one car, and a husband and wife were killed in one of the tractor-trailers.
As of Thursday evening authorities were still notifying families and were not ready to release the names of those killed or a preliminary report on the cause of the accident.
Although the Tennessee Highway Patrol has not released names, Tony Mills’ sister Pamela Houchens contacted The Jackson Sun and said the family had been notified of his and Kristi’s death Wednesday evening.
The Millses were from Bowling Green, Ky., and often traveled for work, said Tony’s mother, Sally Mills.
The couple loved trucking together, Mills said.
“They liked going, moving all the time, seeing all the different places,” Mills said. “… He laughed at everything, good or bad. He was always happy. Happy-go-lucky was the way he was. He had a heart of gold.”
Kristi and Tony had been married for about two or three years, Houchens said. Tony has three adult children.
Houchens described Kristi as “fun and outgoing” with “lots of friends.” She remembered her brother as someone who was “always smiling, always happy and never complained.”
The crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-40 near the 64 mile marker.
Traffic on the interstate in both directions was stopped or slowed for several hours Wednesday and was temporarily rerouted through Brownsville.
On Thursday, the Tennessee Department of Transportation closed part of I-40 near the site of the accident for repairs to the road, according to the TDOT’s website and Brownsville police. According to TDOT, the westbound traffic was affected with the left lane blocked near mile marker 64. Eastbound traffic was affected but had no delays. All lanes were reopened about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
