IDANHA, OR : Fuel spills into river after truck crashes on Saturday, December, 16th 2017

Officials in western Oregon say 11,600 gallons of fuel spilled with an unknown amount entering the North Santiam River and a truck driver died after the tanker truck overturned and caught fire.

Oregon State Police say the crash on Oregon Route 22 Friday near Idanha occurred when the driver hit ice and lost control.

Officials say 58-year-old Ronald Edward Scurlock of Redmond died at the scene.

Officials with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality say some of the unleaded gasoline burned but an unknown amount spilled into the river.

The city of Salem uses the river for drinking water. It shut off its supply from the river late Saturday.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency planned to take water samples Sunday with lab results expected Tuesday.
