Daytona Beach, FL : One person in vehicle crash in Interstate 95 on Friday December 18 2015
A man handcuffed his girlfriend and beat her before taking his own life Friday on Interstate 95 during a standoff with a SWAT team.Authorities said the incident started at the San Marco Apartments on Williamson Boulevard in Ormond Beach as a domestic dispute.
The victim, a Brevard County sheriff's deputy, was able to escape being in handcuffs and survived the attack, authorities said.
The incident ended with a SWAT situation along I-95 that had the highway closed for hours.
The only words I heard was, 'Help, help!' That's it," said Pablo Gomez, a witness who was the man's neighbor.
The couple's breakup turned violent inside the Ormond Beach apartment Friday afternoon. Gomez heard screaming in the apartment next to his, as police said a man, who was identified as Printence Dunkley, 24, restrained his girlfriend with handcuffs and assaulted her.
Gomez said he heard a gunshot.
I got outside, and I saw my neighbor. He was a cool guy but had a gun in his hand. I say, 'Man, what's going on?' I was right there, and he was coming. Nothing. And he goes down and takes the car and left," Gomez said.
Investigators said Dunkley drove away in his girlfriend's car, but they were able to track it using OnStar.
The vehicle was found on I-95 between U.S. Highway 92 and Dunlawton Avenue.
A SWAT team surrounded the vehicle and closed I-95. By the time SWAT team members broke through a window to get inside the vehicle, Dunkley had taken his own life, police said.
He's always been very kind and there's no noise or screaming or fighting. I've never heard any of that," said a neighbor, who asked not to be identified.
Neighbors who knew Dunkley said the behavior was unlike him.
The condition of the woman is unknown.
The man initially threatened his girlfriend, saying he wanted to pull off a murder-suicide during the struggle inside the apartment, officials said.
Dunkley has a criminal history that dates back to 2009 and includes charges of grand theft and robbery with a firearm, as well as several misdemeanors.
