Clayton, OH : Driver on heroin crashes through cars, into school bus near Dayton on Tuesday, November 11, 2014
A driver police believe was high on heroin crashed through cars and into a school bus Tuesday afternoon.
The driver, 35-year-old Kelly Hooks, blew through a stop sign in North Diamond Mill Road before hitting the car and bus, according to WHIO news .
The incident split one car in half, leaving the driver fighting for his life. Christopher Biddle, 27 was flown to a hospital in Dayton with serious injuries.
No children on board were injured, authorities said.
"It's very fortunate that more people weren't injured," Sgt. Frank Simmons of the Ohio State Patrol said.
Police blame Hooks for the wreck, and Simmons said she was given a sobriety test.
“My troopers have reason to believe she is under the influence of heroin at this time,” Simmons said. "A subsequent search of the vehicle the female was driving turned up 'some anti-heroin capsules.'"
Kellie Prater saw the crash take place. She saw just how close the driver came to hurting school kids, and worries that heroin abusers aren't getting the proper punishment.
"Why are they letting them out of jail? Wy are they getting away with it?" Prater said. "Why are they not being punished the first time and they go through the system and they're back out on the street the next day?"
The Ohio State Patrol intends to pursue criminal charges against the driver of the car, WHIO news reports. She was taken into custody immediately after the crash.
