An Indiana State Police trooper and a Valparaiso man were injured Monday night after the trooper's police car was rear-ended by a Hummer eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road while the trooper was blocking the lane for an earlier crash.
At 6:09 p.m., Trooper Davonne Barlow, 29, a 4 1/2-year veteran of the state police, was blocking the left lane on eastbound I-80 east of Broadway and west of the Interstate 65 exit for an earlier two-vehicle crash at the 10.8 mile marker, a news release states.
Barlow had Robert Spurr, 59, of Valparaiso, the driver of one of the vehicles in the crash, sitting in his rear seat as Spurr's vehicle was being towed away.
Kenneth J. Schiffer, 79, of Three Oaks, Mich., was eastbound on I-80 in the left lane in a 2009 Hummer H3 when he saw lights ahead before he rear-ended the trooper's car, according to the release.
Barlow was blocking the left lane for the tow truck to remove Spurr's vehicle when he was rear-ended.
Barlow was driving a 2011 fully marked Dodge Charger police car with all of his emergency lights activated at the time of the crash, the release states. Weather conditions were wet and raining.
Barlow and Spurr were taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary with nonlife threatening injuries.
