Berthoud, CO : 85-year-old man died after a three-car accident west of Berthoud on Wednesday afternoon, October 5, 2016
A three-car accident killed an 85-year-old man Wednesday afternoon at county roads 21 and 8.
According to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Mark Bonfield, the man was stopped in a white Buick in the northbound lane of County Road 21 when he pulled out into the intersection.
He was struck by a Jeep traveling eastbound on County Road 8.
The two cars spun and hit a westbound Subaru pulling a bass boat, Bonfield said.
Bonfield said fire crews extricated the 85-year-old man from the Buick and took him to the Medical Center of the Rockies were he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital.
While his residency is unknown at this time, the victim's Buick had a license plate from Texas.
"(The) Texas (system) is down right now, so we are having a heck of a time finding any info on who he is," Bonfield said Wednesday afternoon.
The man is the 40th person to die as a result of a traffic accident in Larimer County this year, according to records. Two additional people died this year as a result of traffic accidents that occurred prior to 2016, according to Debbie Reisdorff with the Larimer County Coroner's Office.
In 2015, a total of 39 people died as a result of 36 motor vehicle accidents — between Jan. 1, 2015 and Oct 5, 2015, Reisdorff said 30 people had succumbed to traffic-related injuries.
Reisdorff expected to have more information to release on the 85-year-old man Thursday.
