A dump truck driver received several citations Wednesday after his vehicle ran a red light at a busy Broadway intersection, colliding and injuring an oncoming motorist and her passenger, according to police.

A preliminary investigation shows the dump truck's brakes gave out about 12:25 p.m. as Anthony Horner, 44, was traveling down a hill on Washington Pike near Broadway. It went through a red light and collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox that was heading south on Broadway.

The Norton Construction Co. truck, which carried gravel, then hit the back wall of a business and came to a stop, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Horner, of Sweetwater, was cited by KPD with careless driving and no vehicle registration.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol inspected the truck and cited Horner with operating a commercial vehicle without a medical certificate and driving without a valid license for a commercial vehicle. He also was warned for having no turn signals, no warning device and driving with a broken windshield, among other things.

The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as Jeannie Grubbs, 40, of Knoxville.
