Gregory Forbes was on his way to his son’s birthday party when he woke up in his truck flipped over and on fire Thursday morning.

Victoria Fire Department responded to a vehicle engulfed in flames near the motor at about 7:45 a.m. on U.S. 77 Business near Aloe Road. Forbes, 59, of Kingsville, was headed north on U.S. 77 Business when he fell asleep at the wheel and drove off into the grass on the left side of the road and his 1996 blue Chevy truck rolled over and caught fire.

“I went off the road and woke up upside down,” Forbes said.

Forbes was on his way to his son’s birthday in the area from Kingsville when the wreck happened. After he woke up, he saw his vehicle was on fire and was motivated to get out, he said. He climbed out of a broken window.

“I’m thankful I’m OK,” he said.

Victoria Fire Department firefighters put the flames out in about 10 minutes, Battalion Chief Roger Hempel said. Firefighters found Forbes out of the vehicle. Forbes sustained minor injures, but refused EMS transportation, Hemple said. Forbes said he didn’t know what injuries he had, but his shoulder and head was in pain.

Forbes lost cash and race car toys he bought his 7-year-old son.
