RAMONA, CA : Woman killed, children hurt in suspected DUI crash on Monday, 12th September 2016
An investigation is underway Tuesday into a collision near Ramona that left one driver dead, the allegedly intoxicated man who caused the crash with a broken back, and his two small children badly injured.
A 50-year-old Ramona man who was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs allowed his 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck to drift into oncoming traffic on Vista Ramona Road east of Old Julian Highway shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein.
The truck slammed head-on into a 2012 Nissan Altima in the westbound lanes, killing the car's 21-year-old driver on impact, Pearlstein said. Her name was not immediately released, but authorities said she was also a Ramona resident.
A 4-year-old boy who was not properly buckled into a car seat in the pickup truck's back seat was thrown through the rear window and landed in the bed, Pearlstein said. He suffered major, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Rady Children's Hospital.
The pickup's driver's 5-year-old daughter sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was also taken to Rady Children's Hospital.
Pearlstein said the driver of the pickup was taken to Palomar Medical Center to be treated for a broken back and other major injuries.
