TRAVERSE CITY, MI : A Traverse City man was killed in a collision on Thursday, June 15, 2017
A Traverse City man was killed in a collision on Old Mission Peninsula, authorities said.
Ronald Stephan Sarkon drove east on McKinley Road on Thursday at 1:45 p.m. He drove through the stop sign at the road's intersection with Center Road in Peninsula Township, Grand Traverse County sheriff's Lt. Chris Barsheff said.
Sarkon, 76, was struck by a pickup truck traveling south on Center Road. He died at the scene of the crash.
The pickup truck's driver, a 56-year-old Burton man, and his 53-year-old female passenger, also of Burton, were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Barsheff said.
Deputies don't know what caused Sarkon to ignore the stop sign, as witnesses described. They are investigating the collision.
"A witness had said that he just appeared to be driving down the street normally and just continued as if the stop sign wasn't there," Barsheff said.
Deputies diverted traffic around the crash scene for hours after the collision.
