One man is dead and another injured after a head on crash in Independence on Wednesday afternoon, Polk County Sheriff's Office officials said on Thursday.

Two cars crashed in the 13000 block of Buena Vista Road shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sheriff Mark Garton said in a news release.

Daniel Chico Hernandez, a 37-year-old from Monmouth, died after a car crossed into his lane and hit his vehicle head on, Garton said.

The other driver, Kester Harry of Albany, was taken to a hospital in Corvallis, then moved to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland due to the extent of his injuries.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Sheriff's deputies and Oregon State Police are investigating the crash, Garton said.
