Brooklyn Center, Minnesota
A 14-month-old Brooklyn Center girl died Monday afternoon when a family member backing up an SUV didn't realize the child was in the driveway and ran her over, police said.
The girl was one of three toddlers playing in the yard in the 5400 block of Colfax Avenue around 3 p.m. when the relative backed up a sport-utility vehicle to make room for a grill that had been set up near the garage, said Brooklyn Center police Cmdr. Brian Peters.
The toddler, who was not immidiately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The family member, whom police said they were not going to specifically identify, was cooperative with investigators, who were reconstructing the accident with the help of the Minnesota State Patrol and the Hennepin County sheriff's office.
Peters said the tragedy serves as a reminder to drivers to be extremely cautious when backing up vehicles.
