Plymouth County, IA : One dead in a one-vehicle accident north of the Woodbury and Plymouth County line on Sunday morning, January 1, 2017

One person is dead following a one-vehicle accident on New Year's Day morning.

At approximately 7:41 a.m., Sunday, the Plymouth County Communications Center received a call regarding a vehicle in the ditch along Highway 12, a few miles north of the Woodbury and Plymouth County line. The same caller contacted the communication center with additional information stating that there were two individuals injured, one of whom may be deceased.

Plymouth County Sheriff's Deputies, the Iowa State Patrol, Akron Fire, Akron Ambulance, and Siouxland Paramedics were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival by first responders, it was determined that Scott Dennis, 25, of Sioux City needed immediate medical help. Dennis suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City by Akron Ambulance. A female passenger, Samantha Derner, 25, of Sioux City died at the scene.

A preliminary investigation at the scene was able to determine that a 2003 Black Mitsubishi, driven by Dennis, was northbound on Highway 12 when Dennis lost control of the vehicle causing it to enter the west ditch. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest. It is suspected that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, according to authorities.

The Plymouth County Medical Examiner along with the State Medical Examiner's Office are assisting with the investigation.

The accident is still under investigation by the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office.
