Noble County, IN : Two injured in SUV crash after driver falls asleep at the wheel and her sport utility vehicle on Tuesday morning, October 21, 2014
A 72-year-old woman and her passenger were injured Tuesday morning after she fell asleep at the wheel and her sport utility vehicle went off U.S. 6 and crashed in Noble County, according to police.
Karen M. Allen, from Michigan, was driving her Ford Escape west on U.S. 6 near County Road 400 East when she drifted to sleep at 10:22 a.m., the Noble County Sheriff's Office said.
The Escape went off the south side of the road, hit a driveway and went airborne for roughly 120 feet, authorities said. It then landed on the south side of U.S. 6 in an embankment, traveling an additional 105 feet before coming to a stop.
Allen was wearing a seat belt, police said, but suffered injuries to her head.
Richard W. Allen, 56, also from Michigan, was lying down in the back seat wearing no seat belt. He was thrown into the front windshield, police said, suffering head and shoulder injuries.
Both were taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center. An update on their conditions was not available.
Man held in theft at middle school
A South Bend man is accused of breaking into Tippecanoe Valley Middle School on Monday in an attempt to steal band instruments and medication.
Joseph Luis Stoll II, 30, was arrested by Kosciusko County Sheriff's deputies Tuesday. Those deputies were aided by officers with the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force and the South Bend Metro Special Operations Section. Some of the items he allegedly took were found inside his car, which deputies located at a South Bend Motel 6.
Stoll is being held in Kosciusko County Lockup on felony counts of theft and burglary with a $10,000 bond.
