A 27-year-old Haverhill man was seriously injured in a multi-car crash on Interstate 495 in Lawrence Saturday morning.
Police have not identified the man, who was driving a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling south on 495 near exit 42 when he drove from the right lane to the far left lane, lost control, crossed the center median, and was struck by a 2013 Ford Transit van, according to a statement issued by Massachusetts State Police.
When the Mitsubishi moved from the right lane to the left lane southbound, a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 24-year-old Haverhill woman, slowed quickly to avoid collision with the Mitsubishi, and was struck from behind by a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 25-year-old Methuen man.
All northbound lanes were immediately closed due to the crash. Two left lanes were closed southbound. All lanes were subsequently closed for a medical helicopter to land, and the driver of the Mitsubishi was transported by medical helicopter to Mass General Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
All southbound lanes were open to travel at approximately 8:30 a.m., when the helicopter departed the scene. The other three drivers were transported by ambulance to Lawrence General with non-life threatening injuries.
Northbound lanes were closed until 10:30 a.m., for crash reconstruction.
Police are still investigating what caused the Haverhill man to lose control of his car. The investigation is being conducted by troopers from the Andover Barracks.
Troop A Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Community Action Team (CAT), Andover Police and Fire Departments, Lawrence Fire Department, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT) all assisted on scene.
