Boone County, KY : 48-year-old man suffers serious injuries in single-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 on Tuesday December 10 2015
A 48-year-old man was taken to University of Missouri Hospital with serious injuries Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 70.
Raffael Caleca of Warrenton was injured when the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado he was driving went off the road on westbound I-70 near mile marker 135 and hit a Missouri Department of Transportation sign. The truck, used as a commercial vehicle, rolled onto its passenger side, trapping Caleca, the only person in the vehicle, said Doug Westhoff, Boone County Fire Protection District assistant chief.
Columbia Fire Department crews were first dispatched at 6:35 a.m., Westhoff said, because the location of the accident was not immediately clear. When Columbia responders arrived, they alerted the fire protection district. Firefighters extricated Caleca from the truck, Westhoff said.
This was a significant compression of the vehicle because it hit an immovable object at highway speeds, so it was pretty crushed,” he said.
The electronic sign the truck hit scrolls messages about traffic conditions and provides safe driving tips. Caleca had significant injuries to his legs, Westhoff said.
They were concerned enough about the patient’s injuries that we provided a fire department driver so both the medics could work on the patient” on the way to the hospital, Westhoff said.
