Decatur, AL : Athens man dies in morning collision on September 26 2016

An Athens man died when the car he was driving hit a home 4 miles north of Athens early today, authorities said.

State troopers identified the fatal wreck victim as Michael Shannon Thomas, 48, of Hobbs Road.

The troopers said the accident occurred at 6:20 a.m. today when Thomas, who was driving a 1985 Chevrolet Corvette south on Tillman Mill Road, left the road, struck a fence and overturned. They said Thomas was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one in the house at the time of the accident was reported injured.

State troopers said a preliminary investigation indicates alcohol was a factor in the fatal crash.
