Columbia, TN : Motorist flown to Vanderbilt after accident on Thursday, October 6th, 2016
A man was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after crashing his car into a utility pole on Garden Street just south of 4th Street on Thursday morning.
The crash, which was reported at about 10:42 a.m., temporarily shut down the area of Garden Street between 4th and 5th streets so rescue workers could extract the man from the vehicle.
Firefighters were on the scene within two minutes to establish command and determine if the driver was entrapped, according to a Columbia Fire Department report. They then proceeded the extrication process, which included removing the driver’s side door and dashboard, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Cummins said.
“There were quite a few bystanders there with him, and one person trying to stabilize him,” Cummins said.
Columbia Power and Water Systems was also called to the scene to survey damage to the utility pole. Cummins said the collision was not severe enough to knock out power, but the pole did require repairs.
Assistant Fire Chief Ty Cobb commended his crews for arriving on the scene quickly and working to remove the man from the vehicle and transported to a level 1 trauma center in a speedy fashion.
“The guys did a good job. Chris and his crew got on the scene quick and started extrication right away of the patient and were able to remove the patient within a quick amount of time,” Cobb said.
