AUBURN, AL : Driver cited for speeding moments before head-on crash on Route 20 on Thursday, 27th February, 2020
The driver of a pickup truck involved in a head-on crash Thursday afternoon on Route 20 had been stopped by police moments before the crash and cited for speeding.
Police Chief Andrew J. Sluckis Jr. said Thursday night the other driver, a Woonsocket, Rhode Island, man, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus in Worcester.
The chief said Dennis A. Maccarone, 30, of 22 Edro Isle Road, Westminster, had been cited just five minutes before the crash for going 70 mph in a 40 mph zone about two miles up the road.
Sluckis said preliminary investigation by the Central Mass. Law Enforcement Council indicated that Maccarone traveled in his pickup from the eastbound lane “directly and completely” into the westbound lane, where he struck a Subaru around 1:30 p.m. The driver of the Subaru tried to turn right to avoid the crash, but the two vehicles collided just outside the breakdown lane, near the Worcester line, between Windbrook Acres mobile homes and Millbury Street, police said.
Officer Jason Miglionico, who is also a member of the CEMLEC reconstruction unit, went to the hospital after the crash and served Maccarone with citations for driving to endanger and failing to stay within marked lanes, Sluckis said. The chief said police will file a request with the Registry of Motor Vehicles to classify Maccarone as an immediate threat whose license should be suspended.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, the chief said.
