A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition after crashing his Toyota Camry early Monday morning on Bitney Springs Road.
The boy, who is not being identified but who is from Nevada City and who attends Nevada Union High School, was driving on Bitney Springs near Newtown Road at an unknown rate of speed at about 6:45 a.m., said California Highway Patrol spokesman Greg Tassone.
He reportedly made an unsafe turning movement and lost control of the Camry, which began rotating. The car subsequently ran off the road into several trees, and then overturned.
The Camry sustained substantial damage and the boy was critically injured, Tassone said. He was extricated by fire department personnel at the scene and was flown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
Monday afternoon, the teen reportedly had undergone surgery and was in the neurotrauma unit, where he remained in critical condition.
The CHP is handling the ongoing investigation of this collision. The eastbound lane of Bitney Springs Road was closed for approximately 90 minutes and one-way traffic control was established.
Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision, Tassone said.
