Munster,IN : Police investigate auto accident that killed 16-year-old skateboarder on may, friday 26th 2017

The Lake County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate a crash that killed a 16-year-old Lowell boy Friday night, according to a press release.

Deputies were dispatched at about 8:45 p.m. to the area of Parrish Avenue and West 171st Place after receiving reports that a vehicle struck a pedestrian, the release states.

The boy was found dead at the scene, according to the release.

The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Jacob Bergonia.

A 34-year-old Lowell man told police he was traveling south on Parrish Avenue in a 2011 Dodge Nitro when he saw flash of light, according to the release.

He said before he realized that the light was a cell phone, his vehicle hit the teenager, who was riding a skateboard, the release states.
