Detroit, MI : 2 killed in crash after minivan driver flees Detroit police early Monday morning, January 2, 2017

The driver and passenger of a minivan were killed early Monday morning after leading police on a chase that ended when the van crashed into several cars in Dearborn and Detroit's west side.

Detroit police initially spotted the Dodge Caravan hitting a pole near Joy Road and Livernois and noticed its lack of a license plate. As officers went to investigate, the minivan backed up toward one of the officers, then sped off, Officer Dan Donakowski said.

The officers pursued the minivan to Coleman and Tireman, where it struck a car traveling east on Tireman, police said. The minivan's driver then lost control, yet continued south on Coleman Street into Dearborn, striking several parked and unoccupied vehicles.

The minivan's passenger, a 23-year-old Redford Township man, was ejected from the vehicle by the force of the collisions and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 23-year-old Detroit man, was transported to an area hospital and later died of his injuries.

The driver of the occupied car which the minivan hit, a 21-year-old male, was taken to the hospital for relatively minor injuries. His passenger, a female, was mostly uninjured, police said.

Authorities have not released the names of the two deceased men. Dearborn police said the incident remains under investigation and it is unknown whether alcohol was a factor.

“This incident is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to all the families involved," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement.
