Omaha,NE : Police identify Omaha man killed in fiery crash on July, Wednesday 5th 2017
The Omaha Police Department has identified the person killed and the two people injured in a fiery crash at the Interstate 80/680 interchange Wednesday afternoon.
The person who died was Silvano Torres of Omaha, 58. He was riding unrestrained in the rear cargo area of the 2001 Dodge Ram work van, the department reported.
The van’s driver, Nemias Garcia-Velasco, 32, is still being treated for his injuries at the Nebraska Medical Center. Front-seat passenger Jesus I. Gonzalez, 16, was treated and released from the hospital the day of the crash.
Torres was declared dead at the scene. Garcia-Velasco suffered severe burns to his lower legs, police said.
Assistant Chief Tim McCaw, an Omaha Fire Department spokesman, has said authorities believe that the fire was caused by the vehicle hitting the guardrail and rolling. The van was engulfed in flames, he said. Garcia-Velasco was believed to have been ejected from the van.
The crash took place on the ramp from westbound Interstate 80 to northbound I-680; it was reported about 1 p.m.
