Torrance,CA : Driver with medical emergency crashes into Hermosa Beach apartment on June, Thursday 15th 2017

A driver suffering a medical problem lost control of his car today on Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach, sideswiped another vehicle, veered into oncoming traffic and careened off the road and through the wall of an apartment building.

The unidentified driver was rescued from the car following the 7:30 a.m. crash, but was not seriously hurt. He was taken to a hospital, Hermosa Beach police Sgt. Robert Higgins said.

No one was home at the time. The occupant of the apartment unit had recently rented it and moved his belongings inside, but went on vacation and had yet to actually live there, Higgins said. Timing was everything, police said, because the Chevrolet sedan plunged into his bedroom.

“The car ended up on his bed,” Higgins said.

The motorist’s medical emergency began as he drove north on PCH past Pier Avenue. He sideswiped another car, drove into southbound lanes and came narrowly close to a head-on collision, Higgins said.

Instead, he hit that vehicle and became stuck, so he put car in reverse, screeching his tires and sending up smoke from the spinning tires.

Once he broke free, the motorist drove forward and hurtled off the west side of PCH. His car tumbled down a 5-foot drop and penetrated the wall at the Marina Bay Club Apartments in the 2000 block of the city’s main thoroughfare.

Cassandra Summer, who lives upstairs, said she heard loud screeching, looked out the window and saw the car had crashed into the apartment below.

“My first thought was I hope he is not home,” Summer said. “I knew that was the bedroom right below us and if the car crashed in he was going to be right there on his bed.”

Summer said she went outside, awakened the landlord and a neighbor called 911. She said she asked if the tenant was home and learned he was out of town.

“Luckily,” Summer said.

Police closed the route to allow firefighters to pull the driver from the car and investigate the crash. No other drivers were hurt.
