Benson, NC : Man killed while trying to cross I-40 near Benson on Monday, December 29, 2014

A 79-year-old Johnston County man was fatally struck by a pickup as he tried to walk across Interstate 40 to get to his job at a rest area.

Multiple news outlets report that Roy Joe Godwin of Benson was hit shortly before 7 a.m. Monday as he tried to get to the rest area on the interstate's eastbound side. He had been walking along the interstate's westbound shoulder.

The State Highway Patrol says Godwin died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

The crash closed all interstate lanes in both directions for almost two hours.

Troopers say Godwin worked at the rest area at the 324 mile marker north of Benson, but they did not know his duties. They say no charges will be filed.
