Huntsville, TX : Two people OK after being ejected from vehicle in wreck in southern Walker County on Tuesday morning, February 21, 2017
Two people escaped serious injury after they were ejected from a vehicle during a traffic accident in southern Walker County on Tuesday morning.
Kelvis Punch, who was driving a white Cadillac sedan involved in the single-car wreck, was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. A female passenger in the vehicle, identified as O'Kayla Williams, was transported by ambulance to Conroe Regional Medical Center.
"It appears that (Punch) had a broken ankle, but he was found unresponsive, laying face down in a pool of water by the witnesses who stopped when they saw the accident," DPS Trooper Floyd Garner said. "He gained consciousness at the scene, but Life Flight was called and he was transported as a precaution. The female had minor injuries."
According to Garner, the Cadillac was traveling west on FM 2296 about two miles from State Highway 75 South between Huntsville and New Waverly when the vehicle left the roadway on the right side. Evidence at the scene indicated Punch overcorrected and the vehicle skidded sideways, hit a guardrail on the left side of the road, then collided head-on with a large tree in the ditch.
Punch and Williams were not wearing their seatbelts. Punch was ejected through the driver-side door and Williams was thrown through the passenger-side door. Both doors were knocked open when the vehicle struck the tree.
Police believe drugs could have played a factor in the wreck. Narcotics were found on Punch at the scene.
"(Punch) told me he didn't know exactly what happened (to cause the accident), but he said he hadn't slept for 24 hours and he smoked marijuana this morning," Garner said.
Garner was assisted at the accident scene by the New Waverly Volunteer Fire Department, Huntsville-Walker County Emergency Medical Services and the Walker County Sheriff's Office.
