Chester,SC : Chester County Coroner identifies 54-year-old man who died in crash on I-77 on June, Saturday 3rd 2017

The passenger of a car was killed and the driver injured Saturday after a crash on Interstate 77 in Chester County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker identified the passenger who died as 54-year-old Lonnie Gerard Littlejohn of Charlotte.

The wreck occurred at 11:40 a.m. on I-77 north, about four-and-a-half miles north of Richburg, said South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Hovis.

The driver ran off the right side of the road, hit a construction sign and ran into a tree, Hovis said. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and had to be extracted from the car, he said. The driver was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The passenger, who died at the scene, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, Hovis said. Tinker said Littlejohn died from blunt force trauma after being ejected from the car.

The highway patrol is investigating the wreck, Hovis said, and charges against the driver are pending.
