Beaufort, SC : Connecticut man seriously injured after Hilton Head Island bicycle crash on Sunday, October, 15th 2017

A Connecticut man was airlifted to a local hospital Sunday morning after a bicycle crash on Hilton Head Island.

The 36-year-old man sustained serious injuries in the crash on Palmetto Bay road shortly after 7 a.m., South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said Sunday evening.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was airlifted to Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for treatment.

The man rode a bike out into the roadway, heading south from a private driveway and pulled out in front of a van that was heading west on U.S. 278, Jones said. None of the four occupants of the van — coincidentally also from Connecticut — was injured in the crash.
