A passenger car ended up partially in Crooked Lake following a traffic crash in Conway Monday.
The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 31 and North Conway Road. The crash involved two passenger cars, one of which ended up traveling into Crooked Lake which is just a few feet away from the edge of U.S. 31.
Initial dispatch information was that the driver of the vehicle that ended up in the water was able to make it to shore shortly after the crash.
On Tuesday, Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin said the crash happened when Rand VanBuskirk, 64, of Harrison was driving a 2002 Volkswagen passenger car and attempted to make a left turn off of North Conway Road, and turned into the path of a southbound 1995 Dodge Neon that was driven by Amanda Wilhelm, 29, of Pellston. The impact caused Wilhelm's vehicle to cross U.S. 31 and go partially into Crooked Lake.
Wallin said VanBuskirk, and his two passengers, Pamela VanBuskirk, 63, and Benjamin VanBuskirk, 17, sustained minor injuries, but declined transport to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital by Emmet County EMS.
Wilhelm was not injured in the crash, Wallin said.
Rand VanBuskirk was cited for failure to yield the right of way, the sheriff said.
U.S. 31 was closed down and traffic was re-routed around the scene for about an hour while crews attended to the scene. as of 5:53 p.m., U.S. 31 was reopened to normal traffic flow.
