LAKE STATION, IN : Portage man killed while walking on I-80/94 after crash on on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
A Portage man was killed late Wednesday when he was struck by a semitrailer as he attempted to walk across the Borman Expressway following a three-vehicle crash, police said.
Lonnie Willoughby Jr., 37, was one of three drivers involved in a crash about 7 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 80/94 just east of a ramp from Interstate 65 in Lake Station, officials said. No one was injured in the crash, Indiana State Police said.
Willoughby was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck east in the right lane when he tried to move into the middle lane and was struck by a 2002 Ford Focus, causing the Focus to spin out and hit a 2012 Nissan Rogue, police said.
The Focus and the Rogue came to rest on the inner shoulder, and the Ranger went off the road to the outer shoulder and struck a concrete barrier.
Willoughby then exited the Ranger and attempted to cross all lanes, police said. An Illinois man driving a semitrailer loaded with paper was merging onto Interstate 80/94 from northbound I-65 when he noticed multiple vehicles on the road ahead and saw someone walking on the shoulder.
The semi driver continued past the person the shoulder, heard a noise, looked back in a mirror and saw someone lying on the ground, police said.
Lake County coroner’s investigators arrived and pronounced Willoughby dead about 10 p.m. at the scene, according to a news release.
Eastbound I-80/94 was closed during the crash investigation, and traffic was diverted onto the I-65/Central Avenue/I-80/94 eastbound ramp, police said.
