O’Fallon police said the crash, involving a semi truck, happened about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday on U.S Highway 50 near Scott-Troy Road. Capt. James Cavins said the driver of the semi, who is from Augusta, Ga., remained in police custody pending formal charges.
Cavins said dispatchers on Tuesday night began receiving 911 calls of a semi-truck that was apparently speeding in the eastbound lane in the 700 block of West U.S. Highway 50. More calls indicated that there may have been a domestic disturbance involving the people in the semi or “some sort of accident” in the 100 block of East U.S. Highway 50. One caller reported that a female claimed to have jumped from the semi.
Continued 911 calls then reported a multi-vehicle accident in the 8600 block of East U.S. Highway 50. Five vehicles, including the semi, were involved in the crash. Police said the crash site had spread for nearly a quarter-mile. The crash spread through all three lanes of traffic, with one vehicle overturned in a ditch and three other vehicles with heavy damage from flying debris caused by the impact.
Culver, in the overturned vehicle, died at the scene.
Cavins said three people were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.
U.S. Route 50 in O’Fallon was reopened at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after Illinois State Police finished reconstructing the crash. The investigation remained ongoing by state police and the Metro-East Crash Assistance Team.
