Monroe, NC : 70-year-old woman died and seriously injured her boyfriend in a head-on vehicle accident on Wednesday night August 20th 2014
Investigators say alcohol may have been a factor in a head-on vehicle accident that killed a 70-year-old woman and seriously injured her boyfriend.
The incident happened in Monroe around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 74 near John Moore Road.
Officials said that 53-year-old Jose Herrera, of Reidsville, was traveling west on Hwy 74 when he crossed the center line and hit another car head-on. The second car then struck a tractor trailer.
A woman in the second car, later identified as 70-year-old Laral Leslie Callahan, was killed in the crash. Callahan's boyfriend, 64-year-old Paul Randall, who was also in the vehicle, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Herrera was also injured in the wreck and taken to the hospital. He is expected to be okay.
Officials said Thursday that alcohol was involved in the crash, and that evidence was turned over to the Union County District Attorney's Office to determine what charges will be filed.
