Bronx , NY : One person was killed and others injured in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down an icy highway west of Philadelphia on Sunday morning, January 18h 2015

At least one person was killed and others injured in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down an icy highway west of Philadelphia on Sunday morning, authorities said.

The icy conditions also led to numerous crashes and road closures in Maryland and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended bus services in the Bronx.

Light rain in the Philadelphia area caused flash-freezing on the roads and reports of multiple multi-vehicle crashes that shut parts of Interstate 76 and other highways, said Eugene Blaum, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Up to 60 vehicles were involved in a crash on the westbound carriageway of the I-76, resulting in at least one death, a state patrol lieutenant said.

Local media also reported that at least one other person was killed in a separate crash on I-476.

Blaum said that icing forced the closure of parts of I-95 and other roads in Philadelphia and that the transportation department had dispatched nearly 150 salt trucks.

Black ice on the roads just before daybreak made for the most difficult of winter driving conditions, Blaum said.
