BOYCE, VA : Woman killed in Clarke County crash this afternoon on Monday, 9th April 2018

A Berryville woman was killed this afternoon when she pulled out from a stop sign and into the path of oncoming car at the intersection of Bishop Meade Road and John Mosby Highway (U.S. 50) in Clarke County, according to Virginia State Police.

Karen Marie Ewbank, 59, was southbound on Bishop Meade Road about 4:10 p.m. in an Audi A6 station wagon, according to Sgt. Doug Adams, a supervisor with the state police’s Winchester post. After stopping at a stop sign at the road’s intersection with John Mosby Highway, Adams said Ewbank pulled into the path of a 2015 Audi A8 sedan that was westbound on the highway.

The sedan, driven by a 17-year-old girl whose name is being withheld by police because she is a minor, broad-sided the station wagon on the driver’s side, Adams said. The girl, a Boyce resident, was wearing her seat belt and was not seriously injured. Ewbank was also wearing her seat belt.

The impact of the crash caused the sedan to carom south, where it came to rest in the median pointed south. The station wagon was pushed about 20 yards away from the sedan and was pointed southwest after the crash.

Adams said it was impossible for the girl to avoid the station wagon after Ewbank pulled out in front of her.

Adams noted the crash occurred when there was daylight. He added that there are good sight lines and high visibility of oncoming traffic at the intersection. Adams, who said two people witnessed the collision, said it’s unclear why Ewbank pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

“We may never know,” he said.

Westbound traffic on John Mosby Highway was diverted north onto Bishop Meade Road after the crash. Traffic resumed flowing normally about 6:30 p.m.
