Indianapolis, IN : Man killed in 1-car crash on Indiana 2 on Saturday, January 14th 2017
A Man was killed Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Indiana 2 at Union Street, the Lake County coroner's office said.
William L. Rayner, 58, of Hebron, was identified as the victim in the crash that occurred about 9:30 a.m., three 3 miles east of the Interstate 65 interchange, the office said.Witness John Bryant said it appeared the motorist was traveling eastbound on Indiana 2 and struck a guardrail on the bridge over Singleton Ditch. The vehicle became airborne and came to a rest on farmland Bryant owns, he said.
"The guardrails on that bridge are close to the highway," Bryant said. The vehicle clipped eight of the guardrail posts, jumped the 60-foot-wide ditch south of the bridge and landed on the other side, where it hit another 3-foot-high guardrail before coming to a rest, Bryant said.
The engine came out of the vehicle, and the car landed upside down, he said.
Another farmer stopped at the crash scene before emergency workers arrived but was unable to get the man out of his vehicle with a crowbar or sledgehammer, Bryant said.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department responded at the scene of the crash.
The bridge is on the county Highway Department's schedule for widening in 2018.
