Knightdale, N.C : Wake County school bus involved in a head-on DWI crash in Knightdale Wednesday morning, November 9, 2016
Knightdale, North Carolina
A Wake County school bus was involved in a head-on DWI crash in Knightdale Wednesday morning, authorities say.
A woman who caused the crash was charged with DWI and child abuse because she had her 4-year-old son in her car when the wreck happened, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said in an email.
The crash happened just after 9:20 a.m. in the 1500 block of Horton Road near Knightdale High School and Knightdale Community Park, officials said. The road was shut down, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.
According to Knightdale police and the highway patrol, three vehicles were involved and at least one woman was extricated from one of those vehicles.
The wreck happened as the bus with no students aboard was traveling south on Horton Road when it was hit head-on by a 2000 Nissan passenger vehicle, operated by Courtney Michelle Cates, 34, of Raleigh, Troopers said.
Cates was traveling north on Horton Road and crossed the center line into the northbound travel lane, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
To avoid the head-on crash, a driver of 1999 Chevrolet SUV traveling north on Horton Road, “made an evasive maneuver traveling onto the southbound shoulder and struck a highway sign,” Troopers said.
The driver of the SUV was not hurt.
Cates and her son were transported to Wake Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The bus driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Cates was charged with driving left of center, driving while impaired and one count of misdemeanor child abuse.
