A Volusia County firefighter was seriously injured in a crash at the intersection of South Ridgewood Avenue and Big Tree Road, police said.

The driver of the motorcycle, Thomas Robert “Tom” McDonough, 53, was on the outside lane of South Ridgewood heading south shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday when he ran a red light and struck the passenger side of a truck that was turning left onto Big Tree, said Lt. When paramedics arrived, they found McDonough lying on his stomach near the crosswalk, Cheatham said.

McDonough was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center as a trauma patient, according to police. Cheatham said McDonough suffered multiple fractures, broken bones and internal bleeding and has undergone multiple surgeries at the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

The driver of the truck, Michael Thomas Deeb, 22, was not injured, police said.

On his LinkedIn page, McDonough is listed as a lieutenant and a 20-year veteran of Volusia County Fire Rescue.

In a Facebook posting Friday, the Volusia County Professional Firefighters Association thanked firefighters and paramedics from South Daytona, Port Orange and Volusia County for their response to the crash.
