Terre Haute, IN : Girl dead, six others injured in crash on U.S. 24 on Tuesday, 16th August, 2016

One girl is dead and five other passengers are in critical condition after a vehicle rolled and hit a tree Tuesday evening west of Logansport.

First responders were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash just after 5 p.m. Aug. 16 on U.S. 24 west of 400 West, between Logansport and Lake Cicott.

Police say a 12-year-old girl succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and five others — an adult woman, three boys and a girl — remain in critical condition at various hospitals in the region.

An adult man involved in the crash suffered serious injuries, was treated at Logansport Memorial Hospital and was released Tuesday, according to Cass County Sheriff Randy Pryor.

Pryor said all seven occupants in the vehicle were from Ohio. Their identities were not available Tuesday evening.

Initial reports indicated at least six people were trapped in the vehicle as it lay on its side against trees on the side of U.S. 24. First responders extricated many of the occupants from the vehicle. Police believe the vehicle was headed east when it left the roadway, flipping and hitting a tree.

Pryor said witnesses saw it leave the roadway. One witness told police the vehicle may have been attempting to pass another vehicle as a semi-trailer was approaching headed west, in the opposite lane.

Several medical helicopters transported four of the passengers from the scene of the crash to regional hospitals, according to Pryor. A fifth was transferred by medical helicopter from Logansport Memorial Hospital to another hospital, Pryor said.

Several area emergency agencies were called to assist at the scene, including Cass and White county sheriff's departments, Logansport Fire Department, Cass County Fire District, Monticello Fire/Ambulance, Georgetown Fire Department and Prompt Central Ambulance. State police also supplied a drone later Tuesday to survey the crash site.

Police shut down the highway near the crash shortly after 5 p.m. while they worked at the scene of the crash. The highway was reopened at about 8 p.m.
