BLUEFIELD, WV : 5 injured in head-on crash on Wednesday, 7th March 2018
A 6-year-old male was facing life-threatening injuries and four adults were injured in a head-on crash on Airport Road Wednesday afternoon.
West Virginia Senior Trooper J.R. Tupper said the crash occurred at 5:30 p.m. in a curve just west of the entrance to the airport and involved a mini-van and pickup truck.
“According to witness reports, the van (which was traveling west) crossed the center line and hit the truck head-on,” he said, adding that the child, who was in the mini-van, was not restrained.
Tupper said the boy was taken to Roanoke but his condition was not known Wednesday evening.
The child’s mother was driving the van and had to be extricated from the vehicle, he said, and she sustained serious injuries.
Two other adult males in the van were transported to the hospital but their conditions did not appear to be life-threatening.
The male driver of the Ford F-150 pickup was also injured and transported to the hospital but also did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, Tupper said. He was the only occupant.
No identities were released.
“The investigation is ongoing,” he said. “There may be criminal charges pending.”
Emergency dispatch initially reported the child was not breathing and CPR was being administered, but Tupper said the child was breathing when he arrived on the scene shortly after it happened.
Tupper said the Green Valley Glenwood Fire Department and the Bluefield Rescue Squad responded to the crash.
“Both of those agencies did a fantastic job,” he said.
