Walnut Creek,CA : Hit-and-run wreck in Oakland kills 9-year-old girl, injures others on April, Tuesday 10th 2018
A 9-year-old girl severely injured Tuesday night in a hit-and-run collision in East Oakland died Wednesday, authorities said.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau identified the girl Wednesday evening as Zayda Monge.
The SUV driver who fled the scene after the wreck that also injured two other children and a woman who were in the car with the 9-year-old was being sought by police Wednesday.
Police also have not yet said if the injured, a 25-year-old woman who was driving the car hit by the SUV, and two girls, 8 and 10, who were also passengers, were related. Police said they are all Oakland residents.
Chief of Police Anne E. Kirkpatrick and members of her executive team visited the girls’ families at the hospital Wednesday.
The collision happened about 9:03 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of 35th and Paxton avenues.
The preliminary police investigation showed that a Toyota Corolla the woman and three children were in was near the intersection of 35th Avenue and Custer Street making a U-turn to go southbound on 35th when an Infiniti SUV going southbound on 35th collided with it.
The impact caused both vehicles to hit parked vehicles. The driver and other occupants of the SUV ran away before police arrived. No descriptions of the driver or other occupants have been released yet.
The woman driving the Toyota was in critical but stable condition at a hospital and the 8- and 10-year-old were in stable condition at a hospital.
Police traffic investigators said speed may be a contributing factor to the collision but it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $15,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the SUV driver. Anyone with information may call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
